Non, il n’existe pas seulement une âme sœur qui nous serait prédestinée. C’est la conclusion du mathématicien Bobby Seagull qui a officié sur BBC, après avoir calculé les probabilités de trouver un partenaire idéal selon de nombreux facteurs.
L'âme sœur serait-elle unique ? C'est ce que croient 56 % des célibataires interrogés pour le site de rencontres Badoo*. Pourtant, cette conviction ne serait qu'un mythe, selon Bobby Seagull. Le mathématicien anglais, qui a notamment écrit The Life-Changing Magic of Numbers, est convaincu que l'on peut trouver plusieurs chaussures idéales à son pied. « J'ai toujours pensé qu'il y avait de nombreux « élus » possibles pour chacun d'entre nous. Le concept d'un seul partenaire parfait parmi les milliards de personnes sur la planète est mathématiquement très improbable. ». Mais l'intuition ne se suffit pas. En bon chercheur, Bobby Seagull a calculé les probabilités de trouver un partenaire idéal (avec une attirance mutuelle), en analysant 12 facteurs de population : tranche d'âge, taille moyenne d'une ville, taux de réussite d'une relation, pourcentage de célibataires... Et le résultat est plutôt surprenant.
