Dans un post de blog publié sur la plateforme Medium et repéré par Vice, une utilisatrice de Horizon Worlds, le métavers de Meta (ex-Facebook), dit avoir été victime d’un « viol collectif virtuel » quelques secondes après être entrée dans l’univers.
Nina Jane Patel, la cofondatrice de Kabuni, une société d’analyse du métavers, décrit en détail son expérience traumatisante dans son article. « Moins de 60 secondes après mon arrivée, j’ai été harcelée verbalement et sexuellement. Trois ou quatre avatars masculins, avec des voix d’hommes, ont essentiellement violé mon avatar et pris des photos. Alors que j’essayais de m’enfuir, ils ont crié : “ne fais pas semblant de ne pas avoir aimé” et “va te frotter sur la photo”. Une expérience horrible qui s’est passée si vite que je n’ai pas eu le temps de penser à mettre en place la barrière de sécurité. J’étais pétrifiée. C’était surréaliste. C’était un cauchemar. »
